The start of the 90 degree twin - cylinder engine......working on the block

All that you have to do is make a perfect cube.......

Working on the motor mount

Starting on the block work......

Detail work on the block.....

Cutting everything away that does not look like a block........

Starting the bore job on the cylinder fins........

First stage of the cooling fins.......

A fixture to mount the cooling fins , to do the detail work on the fins........

The fixture is a very close fit....Needed to keep the fins true.....

Cooling fins blank bolted on the fixture......The fixture was mounted in the chuck, then the turning of the fixture means that the fixture is (dead nuts true) to the lathe.......

Start of the fin work.......

Bringing the cyl fins base to the needed dimensions.......

Now I have enough parts to start sticking them to each other........

I think that I can almost hear the engine running......(HA)

All drawing dimensions are metric......So I am converting to thousands of inch dimensions... .3937 X ( x ) = becomes a part of building the engine......

Then formed and smoothed the contour of the crank circle....

Silver solder job on the crankshaft.......

A scotch bright wheel to smooth the crank circle.....

Trial fit up of the circle, shaft, and bearings.......

Finished crankshaft, silver soldered, threaded, with the thread guard......

I am now working on the nose piece for the engine....I am spending time getting ready for the NAMES show in Taylor Michigan.......When you take two gattling ×s. 1/3 scale muzzle loading rifle, and fourteen engines, and your self to the show, it takes some time to get ready.........I will pass some more progress pictures, and notes to you as the engine progresses.......4/16/2010

a series of pictures on how I made the nose piece for the 90 degree twin engine.......With the large round of aluminum , it is a waste of material, still the big round was given to me, so the waste cost me nothing.....

Some pictures of the engine, and where I am at today.....A quick assembly of the parts that I have made for the 90 degree V twin cylinder engine.
I hope to have the engine running for the MID-OHIO show, late October.....

I have been converting all of the metric dimensions to decimal, and then where I can I have been adding or taking a few thousands and changing over to our dimensions....I do not have the metric tooling that I need , and I do not want to buy all that I need......I am not redesigning the engine, just changing what I need to use our drills, taps, and reamers........I still need the heads, and carbs, so it will be a good amount of time before it is finished....

The engine is going well, and I think that it will be a good running engine.....My next parts that I am going to work on are the heads......It look as if they will be a challenge to build......Then the carbs. and then a "bunch" of small details......Like anyone else, the time to work on the engine is hard to find........I hope that you enjoy the pictures.....I have MANY more pictures.....I will keep sending you some pictures as the engine build progresses......Dale

gears for the cam drive transmission.........

Setting the cam lobes.......center of cam lobes are 45 degrees apart......Soft soldering the lobes to the shaft.....

I threaded the ends of the cam shafts....I am thinking that I may run the engine with spark ignition.....If I decide to do that, all that i have to do is drill the back of the blind bushing to get to the threads, and drive the magnet wheel for the ignition......

gears for the cam drive transmission.........The pinion gear was just a tube of teeth....I had to make the hub for it..............

Some more 90 degree twin-cylinder engine progress pictures.....I need to finish building the carbs, and then make the rings for the engine......Then we wil see if it will start up......I believe that it has a good chance for a good start up.....

Some pictures of where the engine is at this time.........I am trying to get the engine started up for the "Mid-East Ohio Model Engineering Show at Zanesville Oct. 23......Show is put on by Paul DeBolt , and is a "nice" show......Ya all come and spend a day with us..........

Not too bad for a "old" 1993 CB 1220 Smithy.............

I am now building the carbs for the engine.....I need to finish the carbs. and then make the rings, and do the assembly of the engine, and the engine will be ready for the start up.........

With the head upside down, I flow the light oil on to the valve that I am checking with the vac. running......If the valve is OK the oil will stay in the head......If the valve leaks the oil is sucked through the valve, and disappears from the head.....If the valve is good , the oil stays in the head......You can see the oil in the head......

This is a junked vac. pump which I attach to my engine heads.....Then I flow some very light oil to the valve that is hooked up to the running vac. pump........
